The current Def's the 5th Landy I've run and its been no bother, neither was the TD5 90. And they been worked hard, I suppose Landys are essentially hand built and QC's never been a strong point at Solihull. In terms of the Tranny engine, mines is the 2.4 and I got no problems with it pulling a dble axle Ifor around......

To be fair have also had a Mitsi Shogun which was a bag of shite and a Range Rover which was so bad I took an angle grinder to it and bobtailed the arse off it and turned it into an off roader oddly enough from that day on it never missed a beat until I twisted the chassis....oops...

is the 80 series the amazon???? 1990-2007/8 if so i can honestly say i no of dozens owned by myself and others that have never so much as had set brake pads...

mine isa 1999.. bought it 18 months ago with 50k on clock. its now done 90k and xmas eve the fan belt went on it... guy i bought it from never did a thing to it.... i no that as my mate serviced it from day 1... i've put few sets brake pads in it but thats it... its never been to a mechanic other than for service..

They like rear pads especially towing as there is no brake proportioning valve. They rely on abs to release the wheel if it locks.

Why on earth would anybody buy a Landrover???

I had a disco once. Not sure what was worse.

My wife thinking I must be having an affair with someone at the garage as I was there so often or my suspicion that I was personally funding the entire garage from the massive repair bills. No thank you.

I have a had numerous Land Rovers and Land Cruisers, here in the UK and in Africa, still like both! But would have an 80 or 100 Series Cruiser any day over a Land Rover.

Quite simply a 4.2Litre 6 Cylinder Jap built diesel, pisses all over a 2.5 Land Rover lump all day long.

All vehilces go wrong from time to time, but I'd prefer to take my chances on the possibly higher LC bills than the constant hassle of a LR.

If you have an LC and need advice or probably the best LC mechanic in the UK contact Julian at Overland Cruisers in Ledbury.

I've a 300tdi disco and its great. Will do what the defender does pretty much but in more comfort. Yes they go wrong but keep on top of servicing at every 6000 miles and the engine will last. Just look out for rot particularly boot floor and inner wings and arches. Disco 2's are known for chassis rot also but welding box section is easy. Just had a second hand transfer box in my defender and it only cost 150 quid fitted. For a recon it would have been 600 to 700 which isn't bad considering servicing on some cars can cost you that.
