I hesitated about cavity wall insulation for the reason you've given here, plus the cavity is there for a purpose is it not. When you say there are more effective ways of insulating, what do you have in mind. Apart from loft insulation, double glazing and curtains what else?

Celatex is top do not cavity fill, put celatex straight onto wall then plasterboard etc. If non cavity wall then tile spline to leave air gap then celatex. Everyone seems to forget they can't remove all damp from older properties and if they did they would fall down! Yes you will lose 2 inch of room space with celatex but you will save that in heating bills. I've also dug the floors out and put it under 8 inch of concete toasty:thumbup:

Last year i spent about £1200 on oil plus a £500 service/repair bill on a Efel Harmony oil burner.

This year i binned it and got a Stovax 15kw boiler stove I fitted it (Under Building Regs) and my mate plumbed it to the existing central heating ,We did it in a weekend my 5 bed cottage is toasty it cost me about £2k including buying the Stove and i have burnt about 3 ton of cord wood and about 1ton of demolition timber (I am a building contractor) Cant help buying chainsaws though :001_rolleyes:got 4 now:thumbup:

You're forgetting Jon that Steve is in Scotland's West, where a day's sunshine is measured in minutes, not hours! It's no small wonder that his gas bill is high with the perpetual drizzle and cloud!

Fitted a 5kw woodburner last year to heat living room and with the doors open the hallway and kitchen a little.

I reckon Ive saved about 1/3 on my oil cost over the year, approx. £300. The wood I burn costs me nothing but if I had to buy it I think it would work out move expensive than oil. Plus to spread the cost of the woodburner, flue and building fireplace etc I sometimes wonder why people who have to buy wood bother having new burners fitted ?
