Eco fan?

I use a low watt electric fan next to the fire as I don't have room for an eco fan on top, but it certainly makes a huge difference around the house.

I have bought one, its made an instant impact, instead of the room being really hot it's spreading the heat more so the room is more bearable. I have opened the living room door and the house does feel a tad warmer with the heating off. So far I think it will be worth it.

I wanted one of those but there is no room above my stove to fit it . I understand to make the most of it it has to be on the top and to the back of the stove ??

Look up sterling engines. They also work with cold air. Put one on an ice block and it will work the same as on your hot fire, bit irrelevant though!

do they work for open fires? if i sat it on the mantle or mounted it under the mantle?

They need to be stood on a hot or cold surface to work.

if i screwed a metal plate to the underside of my mantle piece then attached it up side down, would it work?

It would have to get very hot to work. I don't think you'd get away with screwing it to the plate - there is a bi-metallic strip in the base of the fan that lifts it off the hot surface iif it gets too hot.

 

Thinking about it a bit more, I'm sure your solution wouldn't work unfortunately as the fan needs the base to be hotter than the top to function, and you would have the top closer to the heat source in your application.
