Need help with wiring. Aaahhhh!!!

Don't ask why but we had to take the trailer socket off our new forwarding trailer and the person who took it off did not make a note of what wires went where!!!

 

It's a standard 7 pin plug but with only 5 wires - red, yellow, blue, grey and black. The positions on the plug are marked - 1/L, 2/54g, 3/31, 4/R, 5/58R, 6/54 and then the centre one (forgot what that was!!).

 

Spent three hours this morning trying to use a 7 pin wiring diagram detailing 7 wires but obviously we only have 5 and one of them is grey which does not appear on any diagram!!

 

Any knowledgable advice would be greatly appreciated.

I personally just buy a new board for 26 quid. Don't get them off ebay as they are shite. I get mine from a company called trailparts in Watford

Cant you Just stick 12v on to each of the wires in turn and see what lights up on the trailer. You will only have brake, tail, indicator lights and an earth surely?

Get a battery and put black on - THEN test others on+ and wire in to plug. Look at bulb end to find out colours?

There you go. Should be a white wire somewhere.

There are a multitude of different cable colours out there, not just our UK spec.

 

In my experience the white has always been Earth (probably grey in your case). The easiest way to check, if you don't have a battery laying about is to remove the lens covers on the back and take note of the colours at the bulb connectors and note which colour is attached directly to the metal body of the light housing (Earth).

 

The layout is generally as the diagram Al has provided.

It may be on a trailer socket BUT not in a standard wiring set up.

Follow the cable to the light assembly’s to make sure there are no junction boxes and unexpected changes of colour

 

Open the light assembly’s and see what colour terminates at which bulb, apply appropriate colour to correct terminal, job done.
