So guys just started climbing Rec with view to do tickets later in year. From the few climbs I’ve done so far my arms are taking a battering and I feel I’m not using my hips enough any tips to make my climbing more fluid I’m not a small guy either so I know that’s disadvantage.

Current setup being

Petzl avao harness

tachyon rope

klemist knot

Wearing gloves helps me as it reduces the effort to grip. I've messed around with different ones though to find a good fit.

Your arms get stronger and you get more fluid through more climbing, I'm afraid it does feel like being battered at first. I also find the hip thrust a lot easier with hitchclimber as you are pulling above the knot with both hands.

I wouldn't leave the tickets too long though as the training will make you safer and you'll get efficiency tips.

When body thrusting I find the higher I get my feet the easier it gets. ISore arms are a phase you need to go through to get match fit. Having said that I climb with spiderjack, pulleysaver and haas as not getting any younger 56.

Ditch the klemheist. Use a knot such as the one in the video above, or buy yourself a zigzag or similar mechanical device.

Body thrusting is for fools, don't leave it 10 years to switch to a more advanced climbing method, the damage will already be done.

Oh, and treat yourself to a foot ascender!

Yo,

If you plan on sticking with knots for a while before upgrading to any hardware (like I am doing, a fellow new climber), I'd recommend switching to a prusik instead of a klemheist. Coming from a rock climbing and mountaineering background I'd always favoured klemheists and started using them in trees just because I could tie them quicker. But after trying a prusik for a few times instead I found them loads better. You might find different.

I still prefer klemheists for mountaineering purposes, though.
