Public liability questions

There is no legal requirement for you to have Public Liability insurance but, if you have anybody helping you, you will need Employer's Liability cover. Be aware though that Employer's Liability does not cover you for the employee's actions with regards to any damage to property, only to any injuries the employee may receive. :001_smile:

Ok got it cheers,a lot to learn.

Doing your own jobs, as soon as you are climbing, 'best working practice' means you need a groundie, which in turn means you need EL as well as PL.

As mentioned PL is NOT a legal requirement, but EL is, and most companies won't supply EL on it's own.

You're looking at about £1k/year.

I often see freelancers advertising themselves as 'having their own insurance'.

The insurance co's. must love these guys, taking their money for f-all!

But just because you aren't legally obliged to have PL insurance doesn't mean it's not a good idea to have some.
You may also find that the main contractor requires you to have it. In which case whether or not we believe it to be required doesn't amount to much.

They can require you to have PL as much as they like. It still doesn't mean your insurance company won't tell them to 'go forth and multiply' if they try to claim on it. There are many cases which have established in precedents what constitutes an employee as opposed to a bona fide sub-contractor but my law books are packed away for the time being so somebody else will have to cite them.:001_smile:
