My grinder ate a gas pipe!

I had a bad experience of this when, wait for it, planting a rose for a customer as a favour after a job.

the spade went down under a foot deep and straight away, I could hear the rush of gas, and what was only supposed to be a favour, ended up in a rather large bill and a very annoyed customer

Well, simple little grinding job today until I cleaned out the hole and gas started to pump out of a gash made buy the grinder .

Cleaned round the pipe and bound it up with tape, the owner phoned the gas board and after 20 minutes a chap turned up in a van with a clip board and asked for the company name and my signature :sneaky2:.

He went back to his van and returned to say he would wait on site until the repair team turned up which should be within 4 hours :confused1:.

The depth of the pipe was 175mm and im sure it should be 600mm, he said I'll receive a bill but saw me take picture and video and said to keep them and appeal.

Your thoughts please :001_cool:

HI JAMMY your at it again i see right last year my mate hit a 100mm gas main with his new JCB 2 fire engines and it was like a plane taking off with the sound and it cost £10k :lol:so we now take the p.ss out now jon

IMO a cat scanner is the most vital piece of equipment for undertaking any earthworks if it be digger or a small landscape job. They are vital for avoiding incidents like yours.

But then hindsight is a wounder full thing.

But that looks like a plastic pipe. Do cat scanners world's on plastic?

I had the same thing a couple of years back. The pipe was through the middle of a stump I ground out, the pipe as 4" down. The gas people said there was no minimum depth for there pipe so I had to pay. I had not done a cat scan and was told by my insurance not to dispute the charge. The first invoice was for £900 I provided photos of how they had put a mole through the tree root and at the 4" depth and they then reduced the cost to £350 which I was advised to pay by my insurance company(Trust) I paid up and the customer went half with me.
