Ive been putting adverts out there for a while now but ive had no responce at all to them, only word of mouth jobs. How long did your advertisements take to have an effect and people ring up from them?

cheers

I find the success advertising very difficult to quantify.

I should ask every customer where they got my number, but usually forget, as you say the majority are word of mouth IME. But then you do need what I call "seed" customers for word to spread.

TBH I do a lot of advertising because I'm frightened that without it I'd not get enough work.

Over the years i have spent alot on advertising for very little (sometimes no) return. So i don't have adverts anymore, just word of mouth, a web page and direct markerting.

the only adverts iv had in the past 5,mths are a free line in yell ,my web site & the signwriting on my moters,

i would say 90% of work is word of mouth & repeat custom,

often the cheapest ads have the most effect and free editorial the best. My brother did not advertise the business he was starting until he finished employment in case he got trampled in the rush

Leaflets is a good one . We used to mailshot selected customers but dont bother now because of the cost. We use a free paper based nr newbury called the oracle not sure if you can see it on line. A business card size ad is £30 and lasts a month we always get 7 new log customers and even find people keep it by the phone for 6 months. The guy who runs it I think targets value for money good honest, reliable, quality small businesses but we still manage to get in :laugh1:
