Mass emissions from burning the wood will be considerably higher than the diesel exhaust though.

You must remember that the carbon in the wood is going to be released any way, when it rots the carbon is released .

So you may as well burn it and just speed things up, by chipping you are get 2 lots of carbon.

Hate burning, can't be bothered with it. The bottom line also means money from chips rather than time supervising a fire. Re carbon, yes, thermodynamic release will be the same but burning adds particulate, vapour phase components such as dioxins and combustion gases that won't be present with decay...

depends on how hot your fire is. Couple of years ago we left some rhododenron in stacks in the summer sun. 6 weeks later we started burining, and a mate brought a laser thermometer to site. temps in the fire were over 1000 degrees, more than enough for complete combustion of all associated dioxins.

On some jobs it makes a lot of sense to cut all the firewood out and rake / burn the brash with an excavator.

It’s the edges of the fire where you get the problems but an air burner solves the problem and an air burning pit is ridiculously easy to make and speeds the job up considerably.

Our pal Mr B. always prided himself on his pyromanic talents......
