Splitting. Man vs Machine

OK a slightly over the top title but I am interested how long you take to process a pile of rings to 1m3 of sensible sized logs 10"-12" long. I realise it depends a lot on the sort of wood you are dealing with but a ball park figure in time for normal reasonable to split wood with a few knots. What got me thinking about this is I have just done 1m3 of admittedly pretty easy sycamore in about an hour with an axe and wondered if a hydraulic splitter would have saved me much time.

20 mins with a fiskars x27. Amazing how much quicker I can split with it compared to the large felling axe I was using. Can cut and split 4 m3 an hour.

You'll be fine as long as you stay away from knotty beech and old eucalyptus...

On unknotty wood you,ll be quicker than the machine for the first 15 mins (depending on your age) but the machine never gets tired, you will with your axe.

I can split 2 fiddly cubes in an hour and 20min with x27. But If I go all day I ache for days and lose sleep with dead arms. But if I nibble a bit here and there Im ok. Log size 10-20cm diameter.

If you have a helper handling the wood or even swopping roles, far more effective.

OK I am very impressed with Jim and Goaty, 1m3 in 20mins is mighty quick. I don't have any excuse I also use the X27 the rings were averaging about 1' round and split into 6 without sweat but seriously impressed with 1m3 in 20 mins. We do have a Hyycrack but I now only use it on the difficult stuff.

I can split and stack 8-10 cube 3' lenghts of any diameter timber in a day. It is not phyically hard on my body, but i try not to do more than two days consecutively.

Smelly,noisy,saves on gym membership ,uses fuel and sometimes scares the cr@p out of me.
