Know what you're saying SWB, I only do it when crotching a saver below a fork so it can't slip upwards. Mate used to do it off a 3 inch stub above a peg and it used to terrify me!

 

Thanks for the heads up on the Beech, Steve. Don't come across many to fell down here. Pollarding to 2 foot wounds with an epicormic as a growing point seems to be the preferred option among the highly learned people of this part of the world.....
