Those trees look about as bad as topping gets!

I can see the benefits of topping trees but the main prob I have is when the L/A does it to alot of there street trees but wont allow domestic customers to have it done to TPO'd trees.

I'm not up for the argument that the L/A will maintain there topped trees so its ok where Mrs Smith wont so she cant have it.

saying that, in cambridge, parkside police station went and got an 'out of town' company to pollard the limes along the side of the station without getting permission-brown stuf hit the fan when the council and residents (who have the same row of trees outside their houses)found out!

l/a does care in some cases :)

Coppicing up in the air according to the late Alan Mitchell R.I.P.QUOTE]

traditionally thats the idea-coppicing was a way of getting regular product, but if livestock was around, theyd eat the coppice, so they coppiced where the livestock couldnt reach-up in the air - a pollard

To my mind pollarding must be done for the right reasons, in the right place, to the right tree, at the right time and on the right cycle.

There is a distinction between topping and pollarding.

I thought it was Mrs Miggens anyway? :D

I really dont see what the problem with pollarding is i personally think its becouse we have all read to much shigo and see it as a horrible form of tree managment...are not the most ancient trees in are country and europe all old pollards???

some of the most amazing trees ive seen have been obviosly pollarded at some point in there time obviously not great for hazzard assessment but i feel especially with limes it cant be discredited as a viable form of tree managment

Thing is the L/A (around here anyhow in the past) see there trees as the right tree, right place etc but not Mrs Smiths. Well not often anyhow.

I thought that Mrs Miggins had had enough bashing lately :001_tongue:
