Which is why I keep asking wtf so many wood stoves are being sold and installed.

I get the impression that quite a few of the purchasers have not done their homework in respect of sourcing wood fuel or what it will cost.

Everyone seems to be making the assumption that people have wood stoves installed to save money. A wood burning stove is a nice feature in a house and I am sure that many people are willing to pay a premium (and I am not saying that wood is more expensive over other forms of heating) if necessary for that feature.

Unfortunately some stove suppliers suggest that wood is free, I even saw one boiler maker advertising that you could get paid for taking timber off cuts:sneaky2:

I love doing logs, but it is part of the forestry work that i do. I have a good working relationship with a couple of estates, to which i have put in alot of effort over the last five years. This effort is now starting to pay off. Selling a mixture of timber roadside and stockpiling, will if i sell all my split/ stacked logs put me into profit, and a good share to the landowners. All you need is the mighty Nuffield of power and a bit of effort.

If i had to buy in, pay rent, and run a processer, then i would struggle to make any profit.

Keep it Simple

I know of quite a few people who have stoves but don't use it as a main source of heat. It's more a social thing if they have guests. So they may just buy a cube a year or whatever. I'm guessing that's a large part of the market. I guess they probably actually pick up a net from the garage when they want a fire for the evening.

Sorry for the slight derail. If I was trying to compete with gas and oil I would be selling gas and oil. Its alot easier to handle and transport. I was under the assumption that people were happy to pay a premium for fully seasoned quality hard wood but as skyhuck has pointed out alot of people see it as away to save on the gas. This idea is played upon by people who sell stove packages Ie stove £500 flue and installation £2000 . Hence the reason I think this will be our last serious year in logs. I will try and keep my good regular customers going in the future but I see it as more 60 tonnes rather than 600. I cant give up logs altogether what would I have to say on Arbtalk although some may see that as a plus :blushing:
