Got my own, restricted O licence.

Probably CPC exempt, but doing it anyway, some of the info is useful, drivers hours etc, and I am doing lorry loader and some other plant tickets and probably a first aid course that all count towards the 35 hours, so its not all wasted effort.

26t is fine if you dont want to get up driveways. My 18t is 4 metre wheelbase so its pretty manoeuvrable, plus twin rear axles will widen the turning circle unless you get a rear lift, and they aren't great off road.

If you are going big then 32t on 4 axles is the biggest rigid you can run in the UK.

peter

hasnt that gone up to 34t now

We have a 7.5 tonne tipper with hiab which can lift a tracked timberwolf 190 onto the bed. I has two tonnes payload.

Because we are arborist's that use lorry's, not lorry drivers who work on trees we do not need CPC unless you employ some one specifically as a lorry driver, also we operate on a restricted 'O' license.

We do not use a tachograph within 100 km of base because we are exempt. However, whenever you attach a trailer you must use the tacho whatever the distance you travel.

You must also do daily drivers checks and keep records for 15 months, you must create a service forecast so you know when each truck is due for inspection, MoT, TAX and insurance.

You need to enter into a contract with a mechanic who will carry out the service and maintenance on the truck/s.

When you apply for your restricted 'O' license they will want to see the contract along with bank details to prove you have the finacial ability to maintain the truck/s and you will have to place an advert in a local paper saying where you plan to operate from and how many trucks, you can get around this by using another company which already has an 'O' license and put your truck on theirs.

I am fairly confident the above is correct because we have just had a spot check (last week) at our yard from VOSA who went through our vehicles and paperwork which took best part of the day.

If you are competent you can do your own inspections.
