i had a good crawl und the chassis with a hammer seems sound, was thinking about that the other day, any recommendations for treating it? I live in cornwall so salt could be an issue!

 

 

Get it clean as you possibly can, get any flakey off then make sure it's not got wet for a couple of weeks. Then spray and inject with hot wax. I'd suggest not doing this in winter as a chassis never gets properly dry.

 

Using hot wax tends to penetrate better but isn't a long term protection IMO, so I'd suggest injecting and coating with the hot wax, then a couple of days later, a covering of black Shultz will give protection from hard wear, chipping and pressure washing. Also looks well.

We normally use dinitrol cavity wax and then cover that with dinitrol black underbody wax.

Sticks really well and lasts.

But as said above give it a good wash down first

Try get some on the underside of the seat boxes and bulkhead aswell

My friend and I used to 'tinker' with LR's in the past. Re-wiring is something we did. Not just a few wires but from the ground up with soldered bullet connections and the correct colours for each circuit. So green for indicators, blue/red & blue/white for headlights etc. See I can still remember the colours! Always with several earths as the aluminium body was never a good earth. The chassis is the only place to earth and not have problems.

It used to take a week. So there's a guide on how much it will cost + materials.

Avoid like a plague those ultimate nightmare connections....The scotch (botch) lock connector! Also any crimped connection. Proper soldered connections is really the only way.

 

Japanese bullet connectors and a plethora of other lovely waterproof couplings have arrived and also the inter web, so acquiring all the right bits is so, so easy, than in the past.
