Is it a clunk when changing or a clunk when putting power on? ie, slowing down with engine braking then throttle?

Yeah. That's the best to describe it. Mostly in low gear, when slowing in traffic then speeding up on throttle. Get some judder aswell. It's not massive that it's annoying but just enough to notice it.

 

Worst is in first when lifting clutch, it seems to clonk on biteing then pulls away fine, then as I change up gear if I hit it just right it clonks.

 

I haven't really had a good chance to get under her and have a really good, but it's nice to know a sort of check list to go though.

Got a question for anyone with a discovery one.

 

When changing gear is it normal to get a clunk now and again?

 

Seems to drive very well but I get a clunk on 2nd and 3rd. Also getting into 1st at stand still?

 

I got a 90 with disco 200tdi running gear and yeah I get a clunk on the take up of drive and also changing into second unless I time it just right. So think that's down to the synchro. But 200 is awesome engine!!!

Was going to get a good look at it today and sort some rust spots out but had the grandson last night and I'm knackerd. Oh well guess its a day of dozing in front of the telly

We've got the same clunk in the 110. All the UJs have been changed as they were well worn but more so on the front. We topped up the diff oil as both were low. Whilst we had it jacked up to identify a loud clunk when off roading (trailing arm hitting steering guard) we rotated the offside front tyre and had about 2 inches of play before the prop turned. We have a judder at about 40-50 in 4th and 5th and a slight groan from the front on full lock left and right.

Sounds about right but no groan and no major judder at high speed. Just on takeoff. Oh well investigating tomorrow evening.

Buy cheap buy twice, it's a false economy in the long run because you spend more time under the vehicle when you could be earning

 

The quality on some of this far east stuff is dire

The clunk sounds very likely to be the ball joint on the A frame that locates the rear axle.
