Well it depends on what you want to use it for but I would stay away from the defender and put your money into a discovery. You will get a lot more car for your money and it will be much less likely to have been “messed around with” by previous owners.

wise words.

check for rot in the rear load floor and wheel arches otherwise combine work, rest and play for low cost.

I don't really get this "spanners every weekend" thing, ....

I have a discovery and a 110 I driive them like a lorry not a car. They get their oil changes in engine , gearboxes and axles regularly .

I don't how others drive and maintain their vehicles, but they must be doing somthing wrong.

hey all,

looking for some advise, im looking to buy my first land rover its going to be a defender because thats about the only thing i can insure thats not going to break the bank, so im looking for things to looking out for an things to stay away from. im hoping to have a budget of about 3k.

Also looking for advise on insuring it as well. e.g. which companies to try? whats the difference between commerical and normal insurance.

I've got a Defender 110 for sale in the Arb Classifieds for £2k, though to be honest it is needing more work. They break down occasionally and some body areas dissolve like Alka Seltzer. And anyway I'm the wrong end of the UK for you, I believe..If you've driven older tractors, your coming close to what this feels like:001_tt1:. At least with a Jap, whatever you buy is less likely to be a money pit. If you do go for a Landy (and I do like em), for under £3k be careful. If you can hack snail-like diesel performance, ex MOD non turbo models have been well maintained and can be relative bargains.

have a look at http://www.brightwells.co.uk it's an auction house near hereford or somewhere, they show you how much they're going for every week, utility 90's and 110's are seriously cheap at the minute, to do with the fuel prices i suppose? plus the anti-fun government. they sell heaps of jap 4x4s too. the savings would easily pay for the travelling.

They say 80% of land rovers ever made are still on the road!

The other 20% actually made it home.

Landrovers are great and so are what the japs provide. I bought a 110 hi cap for £2400 from a dealer 18 months ago spent time and lots of money getting it going. Like all landrovers once one problem is fixed another starts.

Just converted to a tipper and 300tdi conversion and had the relevent dvla check and found that it was made of 2 landys and was stolen and used in a burguraly 8 years ago. So the police impounded it now i am in battles with the insurance company to see if i can get it back.

If you do go for one check it over properly go with some one, get a hpi check but don t rely on it. Check chassiss numbers correspond to log book and everything matches. Landys are giant mechano playsets and there are many people messing around with them. Get a good one and you ll be happy but do shop around and don t rush into it. if you can visit it more than once incase you missed something i learnt the hardway. There are many good landys out there they are excellent work horses and i hope you find the one of your dreams.
