Hi there, just a query.

 

I've noticed some tractors take the same oil in the engine as in the transmission!

 

Is this ok for when running log splitters etc?

 

Also you can just use universal tractor oil in either...

 

What do you use?

I'll check out our Massey 4345 - seems odd to me? :confused1:

The oils are the same vsc. Trans oil is the same numbers as engine. Check out when you next go to a motor factors.

 

Don't most tractors use the hydraulic oil as trans and hydraulics?

UTO is thicker than regular hyduralic. It will be fine for a splitter but it doesn't work well in chippers as it's too thick.

 

We have it in a 4345 and it works fine with the loader, 4 in 1 and log grab. I know you cant use UTO in a Valtra because of the wet breaks they sort of overheat and seize if you don't use ValtraTrans.

Moden tractors have some exotic back end oils, early ones are happy enough on universal. Don't use universal on back ends designed for lighter oils, you will get all sorts of problems.

Modern tractors with oil immersed (wet ) brakes, and complex gearboxes and hydraulics, need more additives in the oil to preserve the brakes than can be added to a universal oil which will be used in the engine as well. hence the modern trend away from universal oil, to dedicated oil.

Failure to use the correct oil in these situations will lead to rapid brake wear with the worn material passing around the hydraulic system causing expensive failure.

 

Older tractors with dry brakes could usually use Universal Tractor Oil, whist the early wet brake tractors with simple hydraulic systems and manual transmissions needed Super Universal which had more wet brake additive.

 

Any of the systems and oils are ok with the logsplitter.
