I already downloaded them mate, I'm just being stubborn and haven't read them yet.

I'm concerned that when I look into it further it will be against my principles.

I didn't get into tree work because I thought it was cool. I got into it because it's an honest days work for an honest days pay which doesn't include things like form filling and box ticking.

I literally can't bring myself to do it.

Credit to the AA though for making this stuff freely available.

No-one likes a snitch, but I am surprised at many of the responses in this thread.

How many posts have I read that whinge about being undercut by unqualified and un-insured outfits?! Yet, here we have someone that really should have known better (as a professional gardener he can't claim ignorance) taking unnecessary risks doing the job that we have all trained hard to do well.

I think the HSE have done the right thing here - it sends a message to workers and the general public that this sub-standard work is not acceptable.

I totally agree Paul, I have spend £££,s on NPTC training courses, PPE, Loler inspections etc-this jobbing gardner had never padi to do squat-only when the s**t hit the fan did he do anything positive, if he hadnt been reported(and it does not matter by whom), he would still be doing the one handed clingon shuffle now. He was a company owner/businessman and I am afraid he simply should have known better. Most of the Arbtalk members are from a professional background. We go to some length to ensure our own and staffs protection at work, we have lots of kit to maintain, simply put most of us stick to the rules, climb and work safe and get the job done in a reasonably professional manner. The days of the cowboy tree surgeon are hopefully coming to an end. They give our industry a real bad name, do the wrong cuts, leave a mess, and because they have no proper training undercut us legitimate arborists and we lose serious business to the likes of him. Sorry but its high time these cowboys doing quick fix sub standard tree work were stopped, and this is one way of going about doing it. Yes,he may have been made an example of but that was his fault and only his.

Fine sure ,6k a bit much really but if this guy really wanted it down what about getting a subbie in (and a lad with cs38 of course:glare:) thats whats been going on with landscapers for years I expect he had the capability to clear it all up and the tree was just one part of a bigger job.. Type of work bread and butter for subbies I am sure

Would be nice to hear of one of our Caravan Utilizing Nomadic Traveler friends getting done by HSE.

OK this is an extreme, and the bloke is clearly taking way too many risks, but as has been said I bet a busy body neighbor could make any of us look bad if they wanted,

Anyone ever topped out Connie's just using flip line!? ........... Guilty :blushing:

Are you confused by your own argument Q? You seem to be both for & against the prosecution in 2 consecutive posts??

Torn I think is a better way to put it!

On one hand, he is a 53 year old bloke trying to earn a crust. On the other, he is a "professional" putting himself, others and property at risk.....

I suppose my main thought is just that a certain "group" of chaps we are all too aware of get away with this sort of thing day in day out.

Understood Q!

The biggest problem in my area is that every zipperhead with a Mole Valley Farmers account (Agri wholesale shop) has bought a Husq 142 and seems willing to bodge a job just for the firewood! PPE is flip-flops, shorts & sunglasses, traffic management is leaving the ford escort across both carriageways and if the tree hits the ground it's a good job!

Sounds like you have a different (but similar) set of challenges...

I'd like to see them all in front of a HSE prosecution, and the homeowners that engage them.
