Norway Spruce trees suffering ?

Hi all , just wondered if anyone could help me with info on Norway spruce trees losing there inner needles suddenly. The last 6 inches of the branches are still green and the top crown is fine. I have seen six trees in the last month in the midlands area. There are no signs of insects or decay. Maybe it is due to the very wet weather? can anyone help , Cheers Chris

First just looks like sap. White stuff Looks kind of crystalline, in places, like in old branch wounds and is dotted around all over the trunk with more of it higher up:confused1:

Ive looked at a few recently seen the same effects and other pines dying off in close proximity didnt know weather it was phytophtoora or not ? Also in the midlands

that would explain all the ones i have seen and didnt know what it was, especially bad from alford to lumsden i think.

Should be ok if we get a normal cold winter again, to knock the population back again the aphids are all over the needles at the moment at Huntly, but are mainly parisatised in Aboyne when I was there on Thursday.

we had all our spruce trees wide spread in similar condition this year from plantings to 25year plus trees with no signs of insect damage with this years new growth not affected,we put it down to drought conditions or possible frost damage,over the last couple years of warms springs we have had trouble establishing norway spruce plantings with the ground drying out so much but this year its not so bad so shouldnt have so much beating up to do:001_smile:
