Well, I did nowt and nature 'appears' to be providing it's own band aid in relatively quick succession.

 

gap between shots is a little over three months.

I hit a decent sized sycamore near Bridlington in the spring of 2002 with a landrover it fetched a huge plate of bark off. Big as a dustbin lid. Most is still missing and tree still alive.
