I'm a very infrequent climber now and felt it on the last few trees I took down.

I bought a pull up bar in September since I last climbed. I now do every other day:

50 reps in a pyramid, any grip sets 40 seconds apart with just my body weight. Then 2 x 5 pull ups with 30kg weights and 2 x 5 parallel pull ups with 30kg. Then 3 x 10 pull ups no weight. Totaling 100. I weigh 70kg

Next week will be the first time in 2 monthsI've climbed. I'm wandering if it will feel any different to last time?

That's impressive!

I'm similar to you in the climbing front, if anything it's spikes and a dismantle or conny topping, so to real climbing.

I've done no real training for 2 years, so started back at the gym on Sunday, just following a program off an App.

Mainly trying to put on some muscle and get my cardio up, I'm 40 in 2 years and want to be ready for it!

I was 84.7kg on sunday and I'm 82.1 kg tonight.

I stopped the morning huge breakers and take a healthy lunch with me and stopped my crisps at night.

I was always good at pull ups and dips.

I was gutted when I could only do 3 sets of 5(front grip) and 3 sets of 10 dips.

I'm going to do this until Christmas and then do a month of kettle bells in the new year.

Good on you for getting back to the gym, I guess any body weight lifting exercise will increase your power to weight ratio and be good for climbing. If your not on the tools everyday you need to switch to some sort of exercise or I guess or your body will go down hill.

My diet is terrible but I'm not going to address that till after Xmas. Im aiming for 50 kg weighted pull ups and to added 15kg to the pyramid and final 30 by Easter.

I Also try to kitesurf and play squash at least once a week each too

I know this is an old thread but I have just started my level 3 Forestry and Arb so climb all day on a wednesday. I started going to the gym about a year ago, try to go at least 4 days a week and focus on compound lifts (squat, bench, military press and deadlifts) although do other assistance exercises. I have gone from 9 stone to just over 11 and seem to climb much faster and with much less fatigue then my colleagues so it obviously does help. I have noticed however a decrease in my strength in the gym in the evening after spending all day climbing a tree. I hope my body will just be able to respond to this new stimuli I am doing. But definitely it all helps. The guys on my course who are clearly less fit are out of puff after prussicking 10 ft

Diet is the most important, trying to avoid the crash is my aim.

I've been in healthy all week and no fresh coffees.

Interesting posts Steve ,

I guess you've been climbing for a good bit. I'm 50 next year and started climbing a year ago.

I go to "tabata" interval circuit training class once of twice a week and it makes a massive difference to my stamina.

I'm 13.5 stone and 5'9 so could do with losing a stone. Diet isn't a strong point but my wife has gone paleo so I'm getting better.

I climb about 3 times a week. And I'm reasonably fit for my age.

If it wasn't for this kind of training I think is struggle to get up the tree let alone work once I'm up there.

Nice one mate

Timon
