An update: Been to see him in hospital and whilst obviously in a post-op state and covered in electrodes and a whacking great cast on his arm the prognosis is excellent; this is very good news - Doctors expect a full and complete recovery to his arm with no anticipated permanent damage; you can imagine what a relief this is in respect of career and self-employment contexts.

 

Turns out this was the result of a good old chainsaw kickback. Al is not a newbie and imo one of the better ones in a tree if you know what I mean...

 

Saw is not old, chainbrake hadn't kicked in when the arm caught it but it had by the time it connected with this neck.... Hmmm.

Chainbrakes work really well on the ground in a 'good stance', but up in a tree, how often are we really positioned so that a chainbrake will function correctly? Lucky fella.. could happen to anyone...
