Weekend work..... cos you're cheap

There's a firm round our way who mainly does fencing. They're cheaper than anyone else, and advertises themselves as easy to afford. Because they're so cheap they work Saturday to earn enough. Bonkers.

Thinking of booking them to do our fencing jobs. We could drive them to the jobs, get all materials delivered, they could use our tools, and we could just sit in the truck and turn a bigger profit than if we do the job ourselves. Madness, I say.

Don't know how some people do it.

By not doing the job right..

I recommended a good fencer to a customer by saying "if they want the job doing right, ring this guy"

Three months on, I have been back and there's a new fence, 3" posts that are all over the place. I asked them if they rung this lad and they said no because they got a price they couldn't refuse. I asked what had happened to the fence and they said it was the last winds..

I just shook my head and said, I think you'll find it was the fencer, not the winds.

I still can't understand after all the tv program's, all the publicity and still people let themselves be ripped off. Beggers belief

On another note I was talking to an old guy the other day and conversation got to concreting in posts.

He had never heard or post Crete and refused to believe me it existed! Maybe it was just me and the way he is used to doing it! Best invention ever IMO.

Pay a good price to have it done properly using quality materials and probably never have to pay again.

Pay cheap and you'll never be happy and odds are you'll have to spur it or replace it after 7-10 years.

Trouble is you're probably paying double the price originally and people just can't resist what they see as a bargain

in my experience round here the cheaper fencing contractors are actually the better ones who have invested in proper equipment and are able to do a better job more quickly and efficently so can charge less per meter. (this is agri fencing though not domestic)

but in order to do this they have had to invest in some serious post banging machinery, a contractor model post knocker is around 10k and thats before the tractor, digger, auger, wire rollers etc. whereas backgarden type fencing can be done with a spade and a spirit level so therefore cheaper contractors are generally compromising elsewhere:sneaky2:

I'm also taking agric work to clarify - not a clue about domestic stuff
