I've just come back from the pub, had a few and maybe feeling a little brave, so here goes....

 

What’s wrong with having a few pegs anyway ?(not aimed at you SBTC). I've noticed a few 'peg' comments before on the forum and often puzzled over them.

 

I've done a fair few pine/conifer take-downs over the years. I have always climbed the tree first, attached my life line, then come down and started removing the branches from bottom to top (leaving pegs). Once at the top I fell the top of the tree out and then I've got some lovely pegs so stand-on while a section-fell the main stem. (They also make very handy handles for when they have to be 'directionally-thrown' into the drop zone).

 

I should say that I only wear spikes when absolutely necessary.

 

So come on...I've come 'out'

strategically placed pegs show a modicum of forethought. Lets hear it for pegs..!

If you slip and land on a peg could be nasty for your nads done it once never again tooo painful,plus the peg always lands face down and put nice neat hole in the customers drive imo

i think pegs are dangerous (slips etc)climbing/rigging lines get always get snagged, having said that i find myself using a couple if i have to go above my tip.

Is there not room for a silky in a felling?

 

I would have thought it ideal in this situation. A confined space felling on relatively brittle branches with wires where cutting and holding is desirable.

Fair enough. I am not trying to be negative - I have just never found the need for a silky saw when felling/dismantling. I tend to stick with a chainsaw and use step cuts so I can snap off pieces with both hands and throw them where I want. Horses for courses and all that....
