Im starting to research Unimog's as i'm going to be purchasing my first one next year.

Im wanting info on:

is a U1000 big enough or would you go bigger?

What does the U numbers refer to?

Front mounted or rear mounted chipper?

Where to buy one from (dealer not private) and who to avoid?

Im going to spend good money £20K - £30K

Which make 12" chipper?

Long or short wheel base?

Your advice and experience would be appreciated

Regards

Chris

The numbers refer to the model and also indicate horse power, so a 1600 is generally 160HP, but this is not always the case.

No two mogs are alike, you need the chassis number to get a break down of spec.

Personally I would try to get a U1200 rather than a U1000, much more power, due to being Turbo'd.

What type of work will you be manly doing?? are you going to be pulling a trailer??

This is the Unimog i had the pleasure of using in the parks around London and once belonged to Mr Stephen Blair...it was an awsome machine! he sent me a picture of it on the shore up in Scotland...two very different terrains. There are lots of Knowledgable Mog owners on here but certainly Stephen would be able to give you advice...20 to 30k to spend you say? you lucky lad! Post lots of pictures when you do get it and i look forward to seeing it up North!

we have one at work U1250, brilliant machines, to not cheap to keep servicing repairs etc i dont know too much but there is a few schemes where you pay a yearly fee and you get all your servicing done, i think this would be a good thing, i can honestly say that the mog at work has been very good, it cost alot to repair the 4 wheel drive once because it was taken out of 4x4 while flying up the road, avoid at all costs 7000+ to repair, we run a 12" farmi and runs it very well!

:confused1: Thats strange, you can select 4X4 at any speed, with out issue, if I'm doing heavy towing I put mine into 4X4 on hills without slowing, never had a problem.

That's my understanding to. As long as all four wheels have traction!

And ditto on Ac price, wouldn't,t like to comment on others well I would but I won't.

U1000 or u1200 no bigger than 8" chipper I imo, keep it on the back as it will keep it manoeuvrable as you will be tempted to put a trailer on and unless you work on big straight roads then it will just be a pest.

£30k if it doesn't include vat then it £25k

And if it's for both chipper and mog you are going to manage an older u1200with TP 200chipper.

It all depends on the operator, if you are a hyper do it all yourself kind of guy with a minion and love the buzz of the job and love to start early and finish late and cream all the money for yourself then a Mog is the perfect platform.

Go for it, Alex Price is the man to speak to.

If you are not fussed about going fast and work local, then an older u900 with 7-8chipper will do a treat, a pto 6"with 90hp will work rings around a tow behind with a no stress small engine.

Mogs are amazing bits of kit, they break down like everything else, you can either cry about it or pay a guy to fix it but in the right hands they will earn you a fortune.

Good luck and keep us posted.
