Do i Buy a Chipper

If I was starting out today, would I buy a chipper first, before everything else. Definitely not.

A chipper is a piece of kit that you will need one day, but not to start with. First off you'll need ppe, tickets, saws. With these you can sub out to others and get experience. Then you can build on this, start finding your own work, adverts in shops, leaflets and business cards. Then you'll need a yard, wcl etc, build on this and eventually get a chipper to increase your efficiency. Good luck, some lucky people start off with all the gear from the beginning and it works for them, at the end of the day, it's your decision, and up to you how much effort your willing to put in.

if i was starting again, from scratch, the first things i'd buy would be a couple of good sets of hedge cutters, and a long reach set.

we make more profit, for less outlay on conny jobs than any other.

start by doing jobs at the weekends, or use your holidays.

when you get your 30/31, let it be known that you'll take small jobs on.

a tipper would be next, get it signwritten.

build from there.

enjoy it

When I forst completed my first course I need 100 hours practice before I could sit my assessments. I found the local wildlife/environmental voluntary groups useful, up here the Scottish Wildlife Trust have insurance for all their sites including chainsaw usage. Most of these groups have plenty of volunteer manpower but are appreciative of skilled or semi skilled help. In most cases I was given a very reasonable monetary reward to cover 'expenses', I had my saw all my PPE and few other bits and pieces but gained some very worthwhile experience. Might be worth a go?
