sorry about that monkeyd, i keep forgetting that some of the older members of this forum will have memories of the monkey winch as piece of everyday kit, i only remember using one at college a couple of times and that was bad enough.:scared1:

hey reg do you reckon you could use your hobbs as a winch aswell, or would it not have the same power

 

The Hobbs a very workable winch indeed, we've used it several times now with great success. It'll take upto 20mm rope no problem, and whats great about capstans is that you can simply attach-detach your pull rope without having to route the whole thing through the unit i.e. Tirfor.

 

Obviously a tirfor (or similar) has the superior power and is more convenient to anchor though.

we have a winch like this in work! Only used it on a handfull of jobs but IMHO in the right situation it is invaluable, it will winch somedays more than you think it will the only prob i have seen is melting bull ropes when using to the extreme:001_smile:
