Conifers like pine and spruce are readily available bare root. and are very cheap. I'm not sure about leylandii, bare root. It's usually in pots.

as for the comment about leylandii and never plant it : WHY NOT. it makes an excellent hedge. Birds nest in it all the time. So do wasps, as iv'e found out. If the hedge gets out of control, then it's a job for us. I love it.

i worked at a place which sold bare root conifers they sold alot by mail order. they also sold in pots. its not there any more.

the reason i want bare root is cheapness compared to pot grown. pot grown = about 2.50 pound each 2 to 3 foot. bare root i would say between 40p to 1.00 each but abit smaller and have to be watched. i want about 100 in total

leylandii can only be propagated by cuttings the seeds if any are no good. that is why they are mostly found in pots or root balled but some people do grow leylandii in fields for the bare root season like were i used to work

its for a hedge to go round my yard.

Try Prees Heath Forest Nurseries in Shropshire, i dont know if they have leylandii but you could give them a call, iv used them a few times now and they are good Q trees and cheap, you could try Lawson Cypress they have got them bare root 40-60 @49p 60-90 @ 59p or 90-120 @ 72p or if you have the space Pinus nigra very fast on clay soil, they also do Taxus and Thuja bare root and cheap:thumbup1:

WHY? - PLEASE DO NOT PLANT LEYLANDII ask your self or them why they dont sell them , its because its a really poor tree  there should be a LAW against it.

Great tree !

Makes a good hedge nd not too shabby as a single specimen its people not maintaining them or sticking them in the wrong place that's a problem.

filter out a lot of pollution too.

Leylandii are like dogs, they are not the problem its the owners.

Years ago I removed a 60footer that had a 2ft trunk, it was at the end of a beautiful hedge that was around 8ft tall, 18inches deep and the sides were like a billiard table. The trunks on the hedge were about 6 inches thick.

They had all been planted together and the owner just allowed the end one to grow, but clipped the hedge several times each year.
