Yep,works for most domestic work, but I have had the ocasional 'try it on' type.

In this situation you have choices...talk,walk,or Climb & cut.

If the job did not involve a mate of yours it would be so much easier to make a choice, but it sounds like you want to do the right thing without getting mugged,me,I would do it,swallow the loss,& move on to your next contract the wiser:001_smile:

I hear you Geoff, but then they will keep trying it on.

If diplomacy fails, I would offer them all the chip back. On their drive. In ever increasing quantities.

Illegal? They ordered it. Verbally. No written contract.

Touche.

Never work for family or friends. Never have never will. I always tell them to get someone else just so this sort of thing doesn't happen. I would recommend someone to them but never do it myself.

Nail her and run like stink. Should be interesting to see what happens lol

how big is the Ash? if its big enough could you not take away a couple of sneaky loads of logs to sell? I know it wouldnt be much money but still would be something but then would make you look like a champ to the customer, out of sigh out of mind sort of thing if that makes sense

As has been covered, the guy is a chancer, there will be a list of yolk he has tried to bump or has bumped, the reason he used you was because since the age of 3 he has learned to identify and exploit kindness.

I had this problem with 90% of my jobs for years, I left myself wide open.

do not have any further contact with him, leave it to the lawyer and move on

I almost never do written quote, but never have problems like this.

Yet!

This is why the thread started.

We just saw similar in another thread. Whether its "you didn't remove the stump too" or otherwise.

I'm just starting out and this is a big lesson for new business start-ups. We cannot afford to throw away substantial amounts of income for the sake of missing a few minutes of paperwork.

Thanks for posting this Paul.

explain to the customer that your quote didn't include the big ash, but, as a gesture of goodwill you'll do it as long as payment is made in cash at the end of the job.

if you explain it correctly, in a pleasant sort of voice, you might be suprised at their response ( you might not be though  )

we did a re-modelling job recently and when it came time to pay up the lady said to me in a very condecsending voice

"you can't have made much money, did you underprice it ?"

" yes love" says i "just a bit"

she paid me in full, in cash, gave the three lads on the job £20 each, and me £100

i hadn't underpriced, just done a good job for a reasonable price. the other quotes she'd had were miles above ours.
