To split or not to split this is the question

I have a nice pile of Birch that i,m getting ready to sell next winter, my question is, is it best to leave in lengths til then or split it now and put in cube vented bags, or will this make them go a bit mouldy.

id split now and leave to dry

we cut a birch down just before christmas a mate took some split it and has just started to burn it this week

If it is split and stacked to allow the air to circulate, and a cover over the top to keep the worst of the rain off, it should be below 25% moisture with in six months. Left in rounds it will take at least a year.

Yeah, split it as soon as you can.

Gets it dried quicker.

 

Also it's much tougher to split once it dries out.

If you leave it in lengths it seems to rot within a season. It dries pretty quickly when its split as well.

birch realy only want's to be in the yard for a year no more , my timber all comes in 3 metre lenghts any thing 8 inch and under i leave to split on the jappa when required anything over i cut and split into bags or it will rot .

Split it, and get it under cover ASAP

Surprising how quickly birch goes 'pappy' left out in the weather. Kept dry, off the ground & under cover it makes some attractive logs. It's one of the few woods that 'Joe Public' recognises & I know people that like to stand a few 'pretty' birch logs next to their fire, just for show.

Moisture cannot get through the bark. When cut and left in the round moisture within the wood can only get out of the end grain. I processed some last spring that had been down some time, moisture a foot inside the log was 27%, on the cut face about half that. Split is asap and get it undercover, as others have said birch rots pretty fast. Sell it next winter.
