Here's a walnut I took down last year. Wasn't expecting much, but took it to the sawmill and got £250! Can also have a few planks when he's got round to milling it.

I haven't sorry Daryll - I have dried a bit, quite different from English walnut - but I'll try and get some pics when I mill the first length of that which I still have whole and post up here.

To bump an old thread - I might be able to get my hands on a large walnut stick, lovely heartwood colour approx 3' diameter. Problem is the main stem is hollow, so unlikely to be much use for milling. Does this mean the root ball is also no use?

Picture attached is the branch wood to show the colour, this wood is all spoken for its the main stem I'm interested in knowing about.

It's due to be dug out with a 20 ton JCB in the near future...

unless the stem is completely rotten and all heartwood is useless then yes its firewood but there should still be some timber that can be used as even if the heart is rotten then you might get a good 6-12" of heart that turners can use and the best bit is that it will be quartersawn once sliced and diced.

any pics of the stem?

how much unaffected heart is there?

That wood is def worth milling - big heartwood and lovely colour.

Even those lumps there are worth milling - where abouts is it?
