The lack of quality in hand tools is an issue here as well. Were the tools made in country or imported from mainland China?. I believe you were very unlucky or you could take the serial numbers off of the tools if there are any and play the lotto. Your luck or record may change for the better.

The two spades that belonged to me came from a chainstore builders' merchants and were exchanged without even a request to see the receipts. It's anybody's guess as to where they were made but I like your lottery idea :biggrin:

when i started in current job just over 15 years ago my boss had just got a supposedly unbreakable spade and fork - i felt really bad handing both back within first week destroyed!

 

Cant remember who makes the replacement fork but i would pay good money to see somebody break it short of running over with a mog. So there are good tools out there sometimes, its just finding them.
