I too am just starting out and have only spiked under 10 times and found it really disconcerting at first. Though it is getting a better the more I do it so keep on going with it and take it in small steps.

 

I also found having a reason to spike really helped as you can just think about the goal rather than the spiking itself. For me just doing a few pole rescues on a friend to practise for cs38 really helped.

I think most of the problem new climbers have with spiking stems from learning on a pair of irons that don't fit them...if they don't fit - they hurt!. Enough to put anybody off.
