this was on jeremy vine yesterday aft, i only caught part of it was gonna listen on the iplayer, but not got that far yet. i think it's a case of "a man with a little knowledge is a dangerous thing", but you never know, could do the firewood trade no end of good! i mean if people are convinced that it's wet wood that causes the problem then with any luck that'll knock out the guys selling cheap unseasoned timber. waste of time trying to teach the masses which species spit and which are open fire safe (as a general rule)

To be fair on Jeremy Vine the section was about not having a fire gaurd and the importance of one. The fire officer on there bought up how wet logs spit, they dont know if was that or a log rolling of that caused it. What he did say was if there had been a firegaurd then those kids might still be alive and there were no smoke alarms.

It's worse than that, the fire investigation said (mail online)

 

"One battery powered smoke alarm was found on the first floor landing but tests proved it had no battery fitted.

 

Two hard-wire smoke alarms had also been disconnected from the mains, along with a heat detector".
