Did anyone see the "the dark hedges " near Armoy? 200 beeches at 300 year old. If you never seen get a look on iplayer, there are lovely pictures on google if you do a search.

Do you think they were pollarded at some time on the past to grow like that?

i dont think they have been pollarded, just competing with each other over the years and planted as a hedge originally.

 

Couldnt help notice the cutters, bad thumb positioning and hitting the barbed wire fence:blushing::laugh1:

Are they not far to far spaced to be a hedge I first place?

1. i think they have lost about half of the original trees:thumbdown:

 

and 2, maybe they were planted too far apart to be a good hedge, so were just left:001_smile:

I would think so, in there very early days i think. They do seem an odd shape don't they.

There is a house at the end, so presumably could have been planted as an avenue
