Hello,

If the oil is changed correctly and its not abused, how many hours should a Vanguard 18hp be good for...?

Also, how do they compare to the honda V twins?

is that the new name for briggs & strattern ,

Hard to say exactly but they go on for a long time if looked after. A friend has a 96 truckloader with a 18hp vanguard on it. Not used much not but out every day for the first few years with no probs at all.

if its briggs and strattern best thing to do is scrap them IMO ive killed that many briggs and strattern i carnt count them on my finger and toes honda is way better no dout on that one last briggs i had go on me was a 675 on a harry mower half way cutting a lawn and it just stoped and never did start again for no reason what so ever never missed a bet or made a noise and befor anyone say's abuse by me i dont thing so as i give them a oil change around 20hrs of work new plugs and air filter its just a shame that most walk behind mowers have briggs engines on them ive had hayter snapper harry al-ko worsely rover john deer efco mountfeild murry loads and every one with a briggs seems to last 1 season from march to october mabys see 1 and a half seasons and they all die every thing out last the engins

got a vanguard on the log spliter had it for 12 years and im the third owner its been looked after , and it's looked after me .

Vanguard is pretty much bullet proof if looked after,and produces quite a bit of torque so does not need to be revved as much as say a kawasaki fh500which revs higher to produce its power.

Hey, don't get me wrong, my Vanguard has done 120 hours now and starts every time.

I was just curious as to the expected life span.

We had an 18hp Briggs and Stratton fitted to our old 186 Vermeer stumpy.

It ran great for years with regular servicing . Until some muppet decided to mess with the governor spring . Granted it was more powerful but died within 2 weeks .

All good if looked after

Most hours I've seen was a 20hp twin in a ride on mower, not very well looked after, had done over 1000 hours, ran ok but with a bit of blue smoke on startup. Seen one killed in 400 hours, never had an oil change, new crank and rods please!

I have found the Vanguard engine to be better on juice than kawasaki or honda and arn't they made by subaru?
