Hiring new staff

I'm in the position of loosing my groundy in the next few weeks. As much as i hate it, i'm thinking about training someone up (again!), as opposed to hiring trained staff.

What do others do; trained or untrained? and what do you see as the benifits of both

I just got lucky and had a guy come up and ask me for work, but hes going back to oz in 5 months,he came over for some chipper saw and stump grinder training and his sisters wedding.

hes doing a nc in arb in oz over the computer.

Its great becouse hes paid for his own tickets so it covers my back wants the experience so works cheap and 100% harder than the other tards ive had lately when he goes ill be back to the local arb course collage and try and pick up another half decent new guy but ii doubt it!

Taught him felling today and hes the only person to grasp the concept of hinges that ive shown straight away....ill get him in a harness pulling ivy off next week.

Before that ive used untrained only problem is if they have an injury im worried about my insurancse not covering me for them not having nptcs or somthing

a guy i work for had only used un-skilled cheap labour before but the pair of us can do more work than him and 2 un-skilled retards easily.you need to be able to trust people you work with and they know what to do without being told 10 times it makes life so much easier.ok you pay them more but you should earn more at the same time

If I ever employed anyone again, I'd want them trained. In my experience, the untrained ones either: a) can hardly earn their wage; b) slow someone else down as they teach them; c) think they should be earning a lot more than they're worth (eg £100/day for cs 31 max and 2-3 months experience!); d) clear off as soon as they think they know it all to set up on their own, or e) all of the above. It's a nice idea to train someone up from scratch - if you can afford it - but when there's a risk of d) happening as soon as they become productive, then..no thanks!

I've been working in my first tree related job now for three weeks and loving it after spending a year at college doing tree management and getting my CS 30, 31, 38 and 39... I put out 20 CVs when I finished college and got 3 replies back. Not on good money as I have a three month probationary period but I love the work and get to climb on a daily basis. At the tender age of 38 my fitness has not been this good since my army days.

Thanks to the guys that do hire trained hands :)
