I have offered this FOC service within a 25 mile radius of Bolton for the last 9 months and to be honest have not had many takers. Two options MB Trac and 9 tonne logging trailer for assistance in large takedowns. The other is my forward control MB Trac with skip and Heizohack chipper for large brash clearance. What I have found is the occasional large takedown but brash clearance is a no go because people have there own chippers.

I hardly ever bother stacking it behind the chipper, I would rather the chipper ran with nothing going through it for a bit than stack and chip in one hit.

i prefer to have the chipper idling then stack it up and chuck it through. I find that can be much quicker and saves legwork IMO, if theres two you can get the pile chipped between two of you and when its 50% gone one will go and get more brash if theres bits left.

 

I think having a grab and a trailer or a mog/chipper with a grab would be most effective, the chipper would have to be a good size to be efficient and with a grab you could feed the chipper. However as others have said back garden jobs will probably make it a no go as its always in small bits and logs are just tricky.

 

I have had a few jobs where big kit would come in handy, i think you would have some market in site clearance jobs helping to remove logs.

If you've got the kit to move big lumps of timber, then you might as well buy standing timber for your firewood and do it that way. Even if you charge a small fee to collect from domestic jobs, by the time you've driven all the way over there, managed to locate the job, squeezed the wagon up the drive, running over the customers dog in the process, waited around for three quarters of an hour, sweated to load and secure all the piddly little bits of timber, then got stuck in traffic on the way out, then had the tractor break down right next to a revenue checkpoint, you'll wish you'd just bought standing and chopped it down, loaded the big bits and left the brash and crap on the floor!

7.5t with a grab would be great, as that means you can grab peoples wood. which is where a lot of the labour comes in, i dont think theres a huge market for brash as most people have their own chippers for that.

I don't think there is a market here for chipping roadside waste. Most jobs in the domestic market needs a chipper on hand chipping as you go.

 

To pile in one big heap would be impractical and inefficient and sometimes not even possible.

 

Picking up timber for free can work... I do it for a number of tree surgeons but often you have to jump at very short notice, more than half will be softwood, and you have to take what you're given....

 

But once a relationship is established and the local firms trust that you'll do what you say you'll do it works well for both parties.

Don't they do that in Norway. You take all the brash roadside and a company comes along with a huge hiab arm to lorry and it pick it up. Then goes off to power station.

 

Common practice in Sweden too, although a few more chippers kicking around recently!
