Not one for the big boys, but I still split most of my stuff by hand. My electric hydraulic is slow and best suited to two men for decent productivity.

I can split 100's rings without feeling knackered, as long as they split. As soon as I get a hard-splitting piece I have to hit a few times I'm exhausted! Can anyone explain?

After 35 years of splitting wood I'm reasonably adept at judging what will split and what won't.

Easy one Mark,I do it a lot, just make sure you strike down with the sharp end of the axe & dont get confused in your efforts resulting in using the blessed thing as a hammer.

These slip ups do come with age....:001_smile:

When you get older you will realise not to swing at them a second time.:001_smile:

you work all day long at the same pace.... all is good until the bit that wont split, you swing harder, then abit harder, try angling the axe as it hits to follow the grain... still wont go so you try that bit harder...

i find altering my position & rhythm helps lots!!!! :001_cool:

I know all this you heathens, apart from the Brighton thing, may try that....

Same pace of swing, always try and parallel the grain blah blah blah.

100 rounds split, lovely. One round 3 bounces, knackered.
