Yesterday I came across a wasp nest in a conifer. They had taken over a old squirrel drey so when I saw it I was worried. It wasn't until I had got above it and put my foot in it that I realised what it was. They swarmed at me very quickly and I have never climbed down 25ft so quickly. Ran across the garden took my helmet off and threw my jumper across the garden and carried on running, harness and ropes still attached to me.

I managed to to get away with about 30 stings on my hands and he back of my head. But thankfully I threw my jumper across the garden after reading a thread on here about doing that and that was where the wasps swarmed all over my jumper.

Just wanted to say a big thank you to Arb Talk and to who it was that wrote about throwing your jumper to distract the wasp. Saved me a lot of problems.

That was quick thinking chris.... i had to jump into a customers swimming pool two years ago because we didn't realise there was a bee colony half way up a dead standing pine, they came swarming out a short delay after the trunk hit the deck.... luckily the bees just swarmed into a nearby monterey and jumping in the pool made me look stupid!!

Your 30 stings could have been a lot more on another day!! glad your alright mate

Funny stories, a couple of months back I was just about to jump up a plum when I felt a sting right on my right buttock I yelped and sprinted across the garden screaming for help like a little boy I also had my mainline, lanyard, and saw still attached so only managed to get about 4 metres before stacking it straight onto my face whilst getting stung a few more times. I felt like a right prat.

I like to think i'm a brave strong kinda chap, but see a wasp and i'm running and screaming like a schoolgirl, unless i think i can handle it with a large flame thrower, shovel, tank, nuclear missile or such the like! So here's a reason not to become a tree climber if that what u encounter up there!!!!

I think wasps tag you with a beacon in the sting. Because they still came for me when I was in my chainsaw gear about 400meters away from the place I was stung this summer. I only got 2 stings and iced them for 45mins. One was on the lip, it swelled up 3 times normal size. Antihistan cream on it. Next day you couldn't tell I'd been stung.
