A theory course for a beginner

Hi everyone,

 

I apologise if this has been asked time and time again but i've trawled through pages on the training forum to no avail

 

I am looking to find out what is the best course for a beginner in arb theory to go for?

 

There is all sorts, rfs, fdsc, foundation degree, isa etc

 

I live 30 miles from myrescough and 50 miles from askham bryan, it would be good to do a course one day a week, i am currently self employed so i can work around this, i have seen that the one day a week courses last for 3 years.....

 

Online learning is also another possability, with the isa etc, not sure if you can still do the rfs online??

 

 

Anyhow, i'm just looking for some help and guidance on what would be best for me and financially aswell.

 

If you can add any input it would be greatly appreciated

Hi Chris, in general any level2 course, i.e. RFS Cert Arb / NC Arb / ISA Cert Arb(?) will be of greta benefit as a beginner.

 

I'd speak withboth colleges and see whihc one works in best.

Hello I am Leaving the Army in a years time and I am interested in getting into the industry. I intend on doing my courses at Kingswood Training Services in Kent. I have also been looking at doing the Royal Forestry Society Certificate Arboriculture online from Mysercough College over the next year. I am after advice anyone can give me on this course please. I am willing to put the hard work in over the year but will I be capable of completing it with no experience in the industry already? Any advice will be greatly appreciated

I would suggest the RFS certificate, however, i live just under 40 miles from myerscough, and have been doing the full time Fdsc and now onto the third year of BSc, i had no relevant knowledge before this.

 

I have seen guys get some good results from part time, but you have to be committed, even the full time is still 3 days a week!

I do the online FdSc and it is damned hard work doing a full time job and running a house hold with two kids as well coz the missus is doing her masters:biggrin:!

Hi, I did the level 3 national award in forestry and arb at reaseheath and this was perfect for entry level. I was lucky enough to have experience before the course but there was lots I had never seen or done before. The course ranged from soil science to tree climbing and aerial rescue. Tree biology is a big subject and other units we did were nptc stump grinding, wood chipper, chainsaw, mewp and spraying. Well worth it. All assignment based too no exams.

well rang askham bryan today and enquired they told me about the foundation degree which is level 4/5 they said this would be ok to start on, they then told me £3000 for this year, £7000 for next year and probabilly total of £14000 all together, this is a part time course over 3 years!!!!!

 

 

myrescough said they do the rfs online, of which it is fully booked and i would have to apply for next years, which is fair enough that was 460 + 60 exam fee, not bad..... this is only a level 2 qualification though......

 

 

or there is the isa certificate, what level does this give you or does it not work in levels?

 

still none the wiser on which to go for..... deffinetly not askham bryan though!!!!!!!!

Unfortunately, if you wanted to so a degree, you would pay that price (there or there abouts) at any uni/college, part time or not!

 

I started mine before the government put student fees up:sneaky2:

The ISA cert is level 2.

Rfs Cert Arb would benefit you,especially if you are already in the trade. Any basic knowledge of biology,from school or college/uni helps. Start getting your tree idenification sorted, if you havn't already.
