Price of firewood

late as usual... we are currently priced:

 

for hilux single cab pickup, this has level load volume of 1m3;

 

for log burners £70 (all hardwoods, seasoned as billet, choice of cut lengths)

for open fire £80 (selected hardwoods, ie chunkier billets chosen, no spitters)

 

slight discount offered for trailer loads 2 or 3m3.

 

we deliver to couple of places where they ask us to chuck logs into builders bags, they look like a standard 1 tonne sand sack. surprised to find that our 1m3 load fills two of these bags to overfilling. though i appreciate the settle effect, this happens to any load, even the hilux with ply sides and definately the trailer which has steel sides- no stretch, but sure does settle on rough roads!

We got given many tonnes of felled timber for free..

Ended up selling firewood as a sideline to my fulltime job - Why? Don't know.

 

Not had any complaints over price - Bit cheap maybe!!!

Costs me a tenner in fuel to bring back a tractor trailer load from the site

I already had chainsaws and a tractor, the business has already bought a splitter for itself instead of hiring.

We use a yard at my partner in crimes' house and the split logs are in a building so no outlay there.

I bought an old Stihl 056 on a 36" bar because we have got BIG timber, but I always wanted a big saw anyway....

 

Only major outlays are the replacement parts my old clunker of a leyland keeps demanding!

Selling as a sideline will always have lower overheads, do you carry insurance

Not only a bit cheap but almost giving it away on the pickup load.

pick up £50 for 1m3

I always put a Builders bag at about .6 m3?

I was maybe a bit rash saying the pickup bed was 1 m3 - Taking out the wheelarches gives nearer .85 m3

 

But then another guy in town, doing firewood is selling builders bags for £40.

With FREE delivery as far as 40 miles away!!!

your pretty cheap mate, do you buy wood in? i reckon them build bags you filled were small ones also.

 

I have a single cab brava. a slightly heaped load will just about fill 2 standard .65 cubic metre bags.

 

I sell bulk bags @£65, brava load @£100 and 1.7 cube trailer slightly heaped @£150.

Seems the average price per m3 here on this forum is about £80-85 for seasoned hardwood (loose). But is that the price you charge the end consumer? Does it include 5% VAT? Do any of you sell on to retailers? If so, what do you charge then?

I'm selling 1m qty at £65 delivered, its seasonned dry and dry stored so it arrives clean and dry. I'm planning to put my prices up after crimbo. The timbers free as I do thinning work for free. I work mine out from using a 1m cube vented sack unloaded into a wheel barrow and it works out at 8 barrow loads per cube. I don't do this everytime.....obviously. This fills the back of a Nissan Navara flat. Not had any complaints yet and the orders keep trickling in. Bit quiet compared to last year but I'm thinking mild weather is having an effect on peoples buying habbits.
