Right, I removed the sprocket and clutch assembly and gave it a damn good clean, and washed the air filter in soapy water.

Got the saw warm on a full tank and it was only just beginning to creep at idle(about 5 mm every 5 secs, as opposed to 20mm every 3 secs before the clean) so I tweeked the idle/throttle screw a tad just to slow it enough to cease creeping. Doesn't seem to have affected performance so will leave it at that. Thanks spud:thumbup1:

No worries, it may be the clutch spring is getting close to needing replacement or you may find that once it has been used a bit, the thing beds in - sometimes if you heavily grease the oil pump pinion, it can cause the chain to spin until the grease dissipates.

 

Run it for a bit and see how it goes, the idle should be around the 2700rpm or fast enough to stop from stalling but not too fast to spin the chain.

Seems to have stopped creeping on the carving bar too, will be keeping a close eye on things.

What are your thoughts regarding the STIHL 010 AV ?

Any idea you can get 1/4 rims for them?

I have a 009 and the 010 is very similar, they are reed valve saws so aren't the fastest saws but are still reasonably punchy on a short bar and are reliable machines.

 

The air filter needs constant changing and there is no AV on the 009 but they last well and the 009 was the biggest selling Stihl ever, don't know if this is still the case.

 

So - old, slow revving, torquey saws - great for a bit of logging in the back garden!

 

I think you may struggle with rim drives as I have only ever seen spur drums on them - you could try Gustharts - site sponsors, they are good to deal with!

Another delighted Spud customer here :thumbup:

 

Sent my 365 down as it was playing up, I bought a new one to replace it but the new one got stolen, so I had the old one fixed up by Steve. It's fantastic, cuts so much better than it did, smoother with abit more poke to it:thumbup1:

No worries Liam - a pleasure to help you out - especially with your saw getting pinched, not sure the wife agreed with the time your saw was in our porch, boxed & waiting to go though:lol:

 

I did a little tweak to the squish to get more compression that should give the saw a bit more torque in the cut - useful on a saw like this.

 

The rest was pretty much standard service. Took you a while to test it!

Currently got a very sick FS450. No matter which way we store it (level, hanging from engine or from cutting head with engine supported) it leaks fuel direct through the carb into the engine and then into the exhaust. One of my colleagues started it yesterday with about 1/4 tank of fuel in the exhaust which caused a fuel spill in a gravel car park. Today we went to start and because the decompression button is being a PITA we start it with it without pushing it in. Today somehting went "phut" around it and it has been running very very rough all day. Hence why it has gone in for some work. Since we've had it (2 years) it has had 14 tommy screws, 2 handle clamps, new throttle cable, 4 new air filters, 1 fuel filter, new flywheel after the old one snapped a fin (don't ask how) and a new gearbox. Most councils would have thrown it out but we have kept at it.

Sounds like Triggers brush on Only Fools and Horses - "had it 15 years and it has had three new handles and five new heads":lol:

Well I have just finished reading through this tread from start to finish, some great knowlegde guys :thumbup:

 

I recently got hold of an 044, it was filthy so I gave it a good clean and striped it down, looking through the exhaust it seemed like some minor marks on the piston, it looked ok on the spark plug side though.

it had not been running right so Spud said to try the H L screws which solved that problem :thumbup:

 

I got hold of compression tester and as I'm new to all this I could do with some advice.

On a saw of this size, 145psi is a reasonable to good reading - the scores on the piston are either down to carbon or a small seize - if there is aluminium on the cylinder, it is the latter.

 

Sounds like it is cutting OK and with that compression it should work OK.
