I have been swearing at a Stihl HS81R hedgetrimmer today. It was struggling to start this morning so I started to have a look at it on the bench. I found the plug wasn't in tight but that wasn't the problem. Trying to check the plug was sparking was a nightmare as you can't see it when you earth it. Eventually, with the workshop lights off, I could see a spark but gauging the quality of it was impossible. Satisfied that it was actually sparking, I turned my attention to trying to get the thing to actually start. I found that it would fire on choke then start after several attempts but I had to keep pumping the bulb to get the petrol through. Once it fired a few times, it would idle then die, and would not fire again unless I pumped more fuel through with the bulb. This made me think it could be the tank vent, especially as I got a hiss when I opened the fuel cap, but even with the vent out it still idles then dies. Squeezing the throttle just makes it die a bit quicker. Any ideas? :001_smile:

 

Personally I would get a can of carb cleaner, remove both top and bottom carb covers, blast a bit of carb cleaner on to both sides of the carb, remove the L & H screw, blast some cleaner down both holes and make sure you get a healthy stream out of the jets in the diaphragm section of the carb and also make sure you get a good spurt out of the high speed check valve and low speed injector holes when spraying the cleaner in to the respective H and L screw holes, reassemble and use L screw one turn out and H screw 1 & 1/2 turns out and see how that goes.

 

Worth checking the impulse hole is clear by sticking some carb cleaner down it as well!

Stihl dealer estimate was $700 to fix and had 2 weeks, another dealer had it for a month. He finally picked up his saw and drove 50mins to me one way to get ut looked at. Had it a hour tore down figured out why it burned up. Gave options on repair, Redneck it, aftermarket, oem. Redneck repaired for a total of $200. $100 was for new parts.

 

20 mins of test cutting today so far. :bananawiggle:

Update on the moped.

 

The engine is stripped. The pot is nice, no scoring or marks, the piston is the same. No visual markings telling me the head gaskets is leaking.

 

Measured the ring thickness, the bottom ring is the same all the way round. 1.67-8mm, the top ring is worn on one part. Goes from 1.68 down to 1.54 on the back edge. (Exhaust) so uneven wear. Might be enough that when engine is hot its just a that point.

 

For little money its going to get replaced anyway.

The Mikita is for a service.

 

The stihl is for a if I can get it running as it just s topped one day.

 

The husky sas I'm looking at the dogs as one is missing one.

 

The 200t wouldn't start, don't know about this one as it started fine for me. Owner took it back there and then.

 

The two partner/husky cut off saws are there as one has a broken casing where it was dropped, so a good one from the two.

 

The two 170s are for a chop and change.

 

Most are been looked at and started to be sorted.

 

This one is a late drop off just now, a climbers saw that took a tumble, nick naming this one humpty as it may take all the kings men to get it back together again, :lol::lol:

It was also run over by a tracked barrow.

New 090 cylinder arrived for my contra today, need to cut down and cut the thread on the crank base to attach it, will use liquid gasket to seal it up, old contra piston was a pop up, casting on the pot is a little rough inside the ports, so will smooth them down a bit

Got a KM130R in the workshop with what sounds like a dropped valve from what my colleague told me. Basically it was running flat out with the hedgecutter attachment going through some very thin brambles and it just made a big bang and stopped completely. You can't pull the recoil at all. Also have the "ultra reliable" BCS flail in for a new PTO shaft, deck to motor mount tightening, new clutch cable and a new first gear in the gearbox.

I recently warned a local guy off a four mix long reach, all is fine if they are running perfectly but IMO, the two stroke is so simple, no moving parts in the port timing so are generally very reliable and very simple to work on.
