There is no such thing as a good heavy reduction on a birch. If they really want you to butcher it make sure they know it'll look like crap however talented you are and it'll hasten the decline of the tree as well as introducing future management implications as far as the regenration growth and decay at the cut sites.

Spot on! I try to convince leave alone or fell!

Once you start heavily reducing birches you spoil what they are all about- graceful form. They never look the same again and brings on the onset of heavy rot pockets and all the hazards that brings with it. NOT GOOD

As already pointed out try to convince to leave be or fell and re-plant. But its difficult to convince people to fell as they think you are just angling for more cash!!

 

Might be a good idea to ask people to send a few pics of heavily reduced birches. That should quickly change their minds.
