What size chipper?

Since loosing our 222 kwick chip last week I've been trying to decide what to replace it with.

 

We've got the 6.5tin iveco and 130 LR, as old gimmers we can tow a decent size trailers.

 

We've still got the TW 190 which is fine and the kwick chip was a back up that didn't go out every day, but still useful to have and not sure we want to be without a second chipper. I'm tempted to get a different size chipper as I like a variety of equipment as it gives flexibility for different jobs.

 

Would you go bigger get a 9 inch (which would look right behind the iveco) and relegate the 190 to back up? Or go smaller so we can send the younger lads out with it if us oldies are busy.. or get a micro chipper to get us into back gardens..?

IMO chippers over 6" are overkill for most arb jobs....that of course depends on what sort of work you do though(and if you save cordwood for log sales)

Always found it interesting that in Britain you use small chippers whereas the kiwis seem to have gone the other way; the bigger the better. It seems most outfits here start with a 9inch but then I suppose there's less call for the wood, especially when it can be bought large scale from the foresty block managers.

I think you would be disappointed with a 150 after using a 190. (I do use both on a regular basis btw)

 

Its not so much about size capacity, more the ability to get large amounts of brushy material through quickly without loads of snedding up. Especially on nasty spiky material.

 

There are other small machines that cope better than the TW150 though, I would be looking for a wide letterbox feed and a wide feed hopper. (Deffo look at the Quadchip)

The vermeer BC1000 feels small some days, its crazy the difference between here and the uk with chipper sizes.

Yep, keep seeing these tiny little things on the back of a landrover and trying to imagine using the same thing over here. Woudln't work in a month of Sundays but like I say, different strokes for different folks.

Just have a think about how much Brush you process.If you regulary have "Tail Backs" of stacked Brush piling up behind a working 6inch machine,then you need higher processing abilitly,or if your guys keep pace with a working 6 inch machine then it might not be for you.

 

In my opinion a 9inch machine processes Brush twice as fast or faster than a 6inch.
