I am not a tree surgeon so I may be stateing the obvious but the grass is long and green and there is no leaves on the tree so surely its dead and should have been cut down long ago. :confused1:

If you are referring to the pic that central posted its not relevant to this thread ie its not the same tree.

Yea- a very sad incident -It lookd like a poplar, from what I could see in the pic, possibly summer branch drop- and frankly I use incidents like this to underline the fact that if you administer or own an area of land -accessible by the Public, with trees on it or over hanging it , you MUST HAVE written proof of a regular inspection regime or pruning / works policy in place or the solicitors /barristers will eat you fr dinner. No get - out here, no 'oh its too expensive to have work done' ect, it has to be done -end of.

very sad story and heart goes out to the family.

i have posting pictures on facebook, and speaking to park keepers local to me to prevent this from happening - i get the same answer everytime - 'there is not enough money to pay for the works' - i raise an eyebrow and tell they cannot afford not to do it.

So, fencing it off or moveing picnic table-is too expensive ? ( Bloody idiots) I hate hearing of people dieing because of LA , Police, Government cost cutting nonsense .

Not really Steve-it has a habitat value and some asthetic qualities, BUT it must be monitored ! Kx

Agreed, Khriss. Miller v Jackson and Bolton v Stone show that only incidents that are very, very unlikely to occur, ie the shot of a lifetime, can be ignored on the grounds of cost. Given decayed timber + gravity would be highly likely to cause failure then preventative measures are an absolute must on legal grounds, let alone moral ones.

FFS you lot. Lets not turn this thread into a 'who is to blame' thing. You will achieve nothing but to belittle this awful incident, and it wont help anything anyway.:thumbdown:

Now wind your necks in please and show at least a modecom of respect.:001_huh:

:congrats::congrats:

very sad whatever the circumstances, my thoughts go out to the girls family.

How can anyone even think the teachers are to blame!? If you decide they are responsible for this incident, think of the number of lifes they must be saving by teaching kids every other school day! A good enough reason to give them their pensions... or spend that money on tree work...

My thoughts lie with the girls family

No-Im not apportioning blame here-its a sad case as every avoidable injury / death is, it just highlights our duty of care, we, as tree surgeons just identify the very specific risks inherent in trees in the landscape,
