Here's one for Spudlike, or anyone else who cares to pass comment.

 

Taken in this 036 as a spares saw that was said to have seized but then was freed to turn over. On pulling the pot I think we can say the piston has seen its last day, but what do you all think of the pot?

 

Main thing is, it maybe worth trying a piston and cleaning the pot but if you think thats shot, perhaps Ill just break it considering any other unknowns.

Looks like scrap to me.

You can get a new piston and cylinder from ebay for less than £50:thumbup1:

 

Not a genuine stihl one but worth a go if the rest of the saw is good.

So you guys think it would need the pot then?

 

I'd been reading somewhere on here about using hydrochloric to clean the deposits from the pot but cant find it again!

 

My dylemna is, do I go for the piston and try and source hydrochloric, have the risks associated with using it and hope that will do or spend extra pennies.

 

All this is of course, assuming there is nothing else wrong with the saw when this work is done.

 

I do have a slight backup plan if the piston didnt work, as I need a piston for another identical saw, but it doesnt need the pot so Im slightly more reluctant to go for the P&P

I know they will fit, but are they the same bore etc?

It looks pretty bad IMO, the piston has really melted and put down loads of aluminium on to the cylinder. It may be ok under this but any vertical scores above the exhaust port and it will be dodgy using it.

 

The aluminium can be removed but it depends on the plating that is left. If you haven't done this before then a new P&C kit may be the answer!

 

Personally I would give it a go but I have done this many times before and my time is mine!

 

Take care as you have lost a bit of ring from the piston - if you havent located it check it isn't in the crankcase:thumbdown:

no a old one which has been ome (think thats the right term:confused1:) out it was 6/7 years ago but i know i have it somewhere i will look tomorrow with ref to the bore no idea sorry:blushing:

Your post asked our opinion of the pot, I think its scrap and would not risk recking a new pot in it.
