Smart Winch

I like concept of using the harken winch handle to tighten the strap but for mine you have a big 1m bar that two people can get on to get it really tight, and you need to get it very tight.

The GRCS was described as one person set up but this is not really true, very fiddly to do on your own on anything but small trees.

Its possible to lower on the Winch. But probably not intended .

You need to be able to lower on the winch though? Are you expected to wind it up and then take the rope off and move to the bollard section?

The whole point of the harken is to wind in and then let run?

nice one Mike, looked like fun, now (with the smart winch) do about 40 more removals of that size, throw in some big hardwood trees with spreading crowns growing over houses etc and get back to us on how good the device is. Most people will want to know if they are buying a good product that will last and six weeks isn't long enough to find this out.

If you use the visor it is a one man job. Make a kerf cut and sit the visor in, walk around attach the ratchet and away you go!

Thanks for the review Mike.

Unfortunately it doesn't tell us anything we can't see from one photo of it.

Curious points for me are:

1. Okay so you cant tension the mounting strap as much as a GRCS system but can you tension it enough.

2: I'm concerned about the device shifting on the tree but surely with the pull being directly above the device it should remain in place. Am I wrong? Has yours been shifting?

3: is it a fiddle to use the winch with it inside the bollard?

4: how proficient are your groundies?

5: what type and size rope are you running on it?

Also, while your follow up pictures are nice, they show a tree being dismantled, not a winch/ bollard being used.

It would be tremendously useful to have answers to the above questions but also some relevant photos, or even better, some video.

Thanks for taking the time.

1.Not enough because the Contor of the plate usually allowes only two Rubber feet to be in contact with the Tree.

2.Shifts on the Big Bits yes.

3.Yes,its not as easy as the Competition.

4.Me,my groundy, and the guy who lent it to me have 50 years experiance between us.

5.Inch and 13mm Ropes.

My main concerns with this device are usability and design. The design of the device is complicated and its use is not easy.If I used it for ix weeks or six years I would have the same difficulty operating it.
